I read this immediately after reading The Last Colony by John Scalzi, who's kind of the Chash of military science fiction, only with political instead of sexual tension. Lots of snappy dialogue from not very distinct characters, little description. This was a mistake, because I came into this story with my head still full of the political and economic issues surrounding planetary colonization in that setting, and spent the whole fic twitching because this setting doesn't make a lot of sense. I don't look to J2 AUs for rigorous hard sf, but it was hard to change gears.

Still, cute story. Not much substance. Chash seemed to be setting Jared up to effect a much larger change on the Hyperion social structure than he ultimately did, which is disappointing. Actually, in retrospect, the net effect of Jared's actions was to remove the resistance's highest-placed insider, who would have eventually inherited the entire planet and been in a position to make major changes for the better. ...huh.

When I started reading this, that's what I initially assumed the outcome would be. That Jared would stick around and help him from the inside and they would somehow save Chad from certain death. But... that didn't happen. They just left. I was so disappointed :(

What about Alona and Aldis, who are still trapped there, mildly okay but ultimately slaves? DDDDDD:

ayrt

The more I think about this, the more it bugs me. I wish there had at least been some indication that they were planning to come back and/or blow the whistle. The story states outright that it is not that hard to get someone off the planet if you have a ship (since apparently no one is monitoring air traffic) and a man inside. Hyperion wouldn't be making such an effort to stay hidden (the means and mechanism of this make no sense either) if their operations were legal, so in theory they don't even have to go back, just take their story to someone who can do something about it.
