So This is Christmas makes me irrationally RAEGY.

SPOILERS:

It is the most RIDICULOUS story. Immediately, Jensen walks up to who he thinks is a random stranger and introduces him to his family as his boyfriend. WHO WOULD FUCKING DO THAT? What if Jeff was slow on the uptake? Or just said NO. The potential embarrassment. OMG. I've seen this trope done before, but never NEVER so unrealistically. Even that hostage!charityworker!Jensen and kidnapping-him-to-meet-the-fam!Jared fic from the spn_j2_bb wasn't as dumb as this. And the Jeff just so HAPPENS to be Jensen's boss. And EVEN after the ridiculous beginning, it doesn't get much better. Jeff is kind of creeper with how into the he gets, and Jensen immediately wants the charade to go on forever. I mostly just felt like these guys are psychologically disturbed, and wonder how anybody could feel sympathetic towards Jensen when he is obviously a coward and willing to spin intricate lies.

Oh, and ALSO? Jensen's fam are portrayed as the bad guys. It's not even subtle. There's this one argument about Jared that seems just way OTT and the mom gets all guilty and Jeff gets incredibly disrespectful and I just DON'T GET IT. It feel like the author was either taking their own issue with their own family and pasting them into the story to fit, or they're just REALLY BAD at understanding and conveying believable human interaction and motivations.

This crap is supposedly based on something called Accidental Husband? Is that, what, a movie? Tell me, somebody, is the movie this awful? I'm dying to know.

LOL. I had some issues with this story but not nearly to the same extent that you did. I didn't think Jeff was a creeper and Jensen was smitten fairly quickly, but it's a short rom-com story, so that kind of goes with the territory.

Jensen didn't seem like a coward to me. He'd tried to explain the truth to his family but they hadn't been willing to believe him (and worse, there were some implications that they thought his fling with Jared was just a phase, not Jensen actually coming out of the closet) and so making up a boyfriend wasn't a terrible idea. Not exactly smart either, but not terrible.

The argument about Jared didn't feel OTT to me. Jensen's mom was trying to give him some grief about stopping smoking and Jared was brought up in it as he'd been the one to introduce Jensen to cigs. Jared wasn't made into a villain though we don't know why they broke it off. Jensen's mom wasn't demonized either, though that fight wasn't her best moment. Jeff's response didn't seem disrespectful at all, or at least not inappropriately so. He was acting protective of his "boyfriend".

The story felt like "classic" slash. There were a lot of tropes broken out that I hadn't seen in years and it was somewhat odd to see them again. Not bad, so to say. Just unusual. Jensen was a bit too flighty for me to really like him and he blushed all the time, but I loved Jeff's characterization. The family wasn't developed much at all and the plot was incredibly simple, but I liked it over all. It was a sweet, feel good story and it's rare to get those with JDM/JA. I'll take what I can get!

Hmm, that's probably what's got me so bothered. I equate poorly developed side characters, an unsympathetic MC, and an unbelievable plotline with the bad-to-mediocre!range fic. But if you can settle for it, more power to you!

I meant "classic" in the sense of the style of slash I saw a lot ten plus years ago and not often now in terms of character dynamics, not stories I'd call classics of the genre in a positive sense. If that helps?

I didn't see Jensen as unsympathetic, just not really compelling either. And like I said, I did like Jeff. Though yeah, given how rare JDM/JA comes along, my standards here are lower than they are for other pairings.

Accidental Husband is a romantic comedy movie that stars JDM, Uma Thurman and Colin Firth. JDM is so freaking hot (fireman ♥ )in that movie that it's definitely worth watching despite the fact that it's a typically bad chick-flick movie. :)

I Can Dream the Rest Away was pretty good. It's the long-lost-brother-that-I-had-sex-with trope, but when Dean sees Sam first, he's immediately attracted to him, despite knowing full well that they're brothers. Which made me happy because they was generally less angsting than I've seen in fics where they get together then freak out once they find out.

A quick, fairly simple story with a well written bottom!Sam. Well, it's 20 000 words, but it didn't really feel like it

Drawback was that Dean doesn't appear to grieve much for his dad pretty much straight after meeting Sam, which seemed a little OOC for me. Tiny drawback, but works well with the overall 'simple' feel of the story.

Yeah, I enjoyed "I Can Dream the Rest Away" a lot, too. Great storytelling. It definitely didn't feel as long as it actually is. I didn't feel like Dean was handwaving John's death, more like natural progression and Dean's repression skills.

Not for those with an irrational hate for typos, though. They're all over the place, especially the first part.

Also, the sex scene at the end made me laugh. It wasn't lolarious in an offensive/bad way, but it was... pretty funny. The writer should've ended the story one scene before the sex. Have quotes:

"I got you, Sammy," Dean says with a smile, kissing Sam once, twice more before pulling away. He finds the lube on the floor behind the driver seat where he flung it, and fumbles a condom out from the back pocket of his jeans.

and

"You don't need to mark me with your come, dumbass," he mumbles.

I'm already yours, he thinks but doesn't dare say it. He's sure Sam already knows anyway.

Sam laughs. "Nah," he says, kissing the bridge of Dean's nose. "But I can."

NA. Too schmoopy to be IC, but not bad enough to be really lulzworthy, no.

IDK. I laughed pretty hard at the conveniently-placed lube and condom as well as the marking Dean with the come. I agree that it wasn't cringeworthy, but it's definitely not what I'd expect (or want) from porn. YMMV. :)

sonofabiscuit always hits my kinks. Dean on a motorcycle, accidental voyeurism, teenage hormones and angsty UST...fun, hot story. I like realism of her fic, the gritty details; you get a good feel for the texture of the boys' transient, poverty-stricken lives.

Good fic.

POSITIVES: What nonnie above said, I'll second that. And I have to add that I loved the way Dean and Sam were forced to fix the toilets and such in exchange for rent. Great details. And that line about trailer parks having a sense of permanence. That line hit me really hard. And Dean's whole relationship with the Paul(?) guy and Sam's thing with Ali-but-I'm-not-gay.

NEGATIVES: John. OMG. DNW abusive father calling Dean a slut. But even though I hated the characterization with a passion and wish the author had chosen a different way, I can't fault the writing. She selled it. Which kind of makes it even more DNW. ALSO: Dean was kinda pushy? Like, it was obviously consensual but it still squicked me a little when the sexing first started, on the couch. And when Dean grabbed Sam's hand and put it on his hard-on on the bike... :\ Sam's reaction was very believable, though, which I enjoyed.

Grade of B, I'd say. Worth the read.

ayrt. I LOVED the way Dean took the lead at times. I read a lot of teen Sam/Dean, and I've gotten very tired of having Sam always be the sexual aggressor between them. I found it hot as hell, tbh.

John was a bit more judgmental about Dean fucking a guy than I'd write him as, yeah. Although that's pretty much up to the author; we don't have any canon indication of how John felt about gay guys, do we? None that I recall.

And yes, that one line about the trailer park was perfect! It really struck me, too.

Was that consensual or non-consensual?

They weren't in a sexual relationship yet at that point. Dean gave Sam a ride home on his bike, both of them got hard-ons from the vibrations. Dean felt Sam's hard-on and teased him about it, said it was normal, put Sam's hand on his to show him. He was purposefully being shocking and yanking Sam's chain.

No doubt meme will decide that that was squicky and non-con and that POOR D:EAN WAS RAPIN' HIS SAMMEH.
