Otherwise, yes, it stifles conversation. As an author, however, I'm keenly interested in what my readers think without them feeling like they have to be nice (meme seems to inspire this and I have no idea if it's just because it's anon or because the commenters seem to think that the author won't read what's written--probably a combination of the two).
