I paint Sam and Dean as more sympathetic than canon tends to write them

Same, unfortunately. They have these amazing heroic attempts to save perfect strangers and it makes me melt every time but they do such a seriously sucky job with anyone they already know. D: I think you're right that it's lazy writing rather than intentional indifference but it doesn't make them seem any less like dicks in the end.
