I try to believe something like that, both because it makes infinitely more sense with Sam's characterization, and because if they are going with switching from present to past narrative through the season it just makes so much more artistic sense that there should be reveals in both Dean AND Sam's flashback narratives eventually that make for an actual twist in the current time storyline -- it it's just filling in the space of what Sam did in the missing year without contributing anything that changes viewers' impression of the initial setup, that's even clumsier storytelling than Spn has ever achieved.
And if something like that is happening, judging from what the information flow seems to have been in other seasons, Jared simply doesn't know, so he's obviously supplying a different framework for his accounts of Sam's situation.
