Sam feels like a much more dynamic and engaging character in S6-S7. There's so much more to do with him and canon handled him so much better than they did Dean. The only interesting thing that Dean had going on was the Lisa and Ben storyline and they did a horrible job with that.
It doesn't surprise me at all that people aren't interested in Dean right now, with the way he's been portrayed lately. No meaty storylines and an often outright unsympathetic portrayal means people go looking elsewhere.
