I did when I was younger, mostly Agatha Christie (I even have a tiny dog named after her now).

These days I mainly read biographies, memoirs and historical non-fiction, with a smattering of fiction. From time to time there will be a mystery built into the subject matter- the book "City of Falling Angels" by John Berendt starts with the burning of the Fenice (a Venetian opera house), and the author discusses the investigation and all the various players involved, but its really a book about Venetians, and the culture of Venice (and a beautiful, funny book, btw).

"The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson is another good one; half the book is about H.H. Holmes, kind of a factual retelling of the construction of his creepy ass "murder castle", which is thrilling in itself, though not exactly suspenseful, while the rest of the book is about Chicago's World's Fair.

Do you have any recs? I've been reading a lot of war memoirs lately, and I could really use some quick and easy filler books to read in between them.

Agatha Christie! I loved Agatha Christie when I was young too. Poirot and Miss Marple and Tommy and Tupence, I loved them all. Have you watched Gosford Park? It reminded me so much of an Agatha Christie novel, it was a joy to watch.

I'm going to download "City of Falling Angels" and "The Devil in the White City", thank you for the suggestions :)

These last few years I'm tending to read more books by South American authors, I'mnot sure why. The last one I read was "The War at the End of the World" by Mario Vargas Llosa. That one had a lot of Brazil's history and political ideologies mixed in. I've read some books by Jorge Amado that I loved and "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Garcia Marquez was very enjoyable too.

Although recently I've spent all my reading time reading fic XD

I love Gosford Park! I watched it everyday for two weeks when I was sick a few years back, but it never occurred to me to equate it with an Agatha Christie novel. I'll have to watch again (and possibly dig up all my old Agatha Christie books).

Thanks for the recs. I also spend a lot of time reading fic, and I'm really trying to cut back. This goofy James Patterson book really isn't helping things- it's writing, plot and characterization is worse than about 90% of the fan fic I've read recently, and I read a lot of fic.

Friends of Friends

Can someone tell me if RSS feeds show up when someone uses the friends of friends feature on LJ? I'm thinking they don't, but I haven't been able to figure that out 100%. Any nonnies regularly browse by using friendsfriends?

Wish I could help you but I don't know, nonnie. I don't use lj much.

I just checked my friendsfriends and third entry down was an RSS feed, so yes, they show up.

Google analytics question

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently started using google analytics for a website but I don't think the thing is tracking visits from people on mobile phones. Has anyone used this? Is it reliable? It probably is. But a bit confusing, I'm finding it.

Re: Google analytics question

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Older model phones whose web browsers don't use either cookies or java script aren't tracked, but smart phones should be okay. Analytics only tracks devices that can use either java script or cookies.

*sigh*. It does work very well and track all visits. I was just in denial. There's this person who I like very much and that I sometimes talk at (not too much because I don't want to appear too, too desperate) that I was hoping they'd visit my tumblr. Maybe show an interest. But nope, nothing. It was the only reason I installed google analytics lol. And they have a smart phone so there's no chance.

Freaking out a bit

(Anonymous) 2012-08-13 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The other day, I wrote about me being alone in my student flat and therefore a little spooked (and I didn't want to go all OT on the main post, so here I am.) And I kind of calmed down a bit after reading some funny fic, but today is even worse. About an hour ago, someone entered the flat, apparently to open some windows. Well, the problem is, there's now a draft and I hear some constant clicking, and it's creepy as fuck. But even worse, I don't know if the person left. For all I know, they're still here somewhere. But all doors are leaned against the frame (I hope that that's the source of the noise), so it looks like I'm alone here.

I wanted to ask at the reception if someone else moved in or if it was just cleaning staff (there was a renovation and things are a bit messy), but it's closed. Great. What now? I don't really want to call security because I'm scared of the wind.

I don't really know what to do. I mean, should I just yell "helloooo?" I wish I had friends whom I could call.

And oh god, the automatic light in the hallway just went on but nobody's there. Was it just because the doors moved a bit? Wtf, is my life turning into a creepypasta? I am seriously so scared. I just wanted to enjoy a nice and quiet evening after the exam craze. Guess who's not sleeping tonight?! I should probably calm down because it's not even dark yet, but... still.

Yes, just yell out "hellooo." If there's no one there, then there's no one to hear you yell, and if there is someone there, they'll probably introduce themselves. No sense spending the next several hours creeped out.

If they left without any plans to come back, it sounds kind of rude to me to open up the windows without even asking the person living there about it, but if the breeze and noise is freaking you out, you could always close them again.

The auto light could totally be the doors, though.

I'm wearing a new pair of pants today. I forgot to remove the sticker covering the back of one leg with the size repeated over and over on it (so that when the pants are folded up and sitting on the store shelf, you don't have to unfold them to see the size). I've been walking around work for three hours like that, before I noticed. I'm feeling a little humiliated now.

I hate it when stuff like that happens... I hope nobody else noticed? I once ran around an entire day with two bright yellow and red clothespins on my grey skirt. I don't even want to know how dorky that looked.

And okay, I did yell, and nobody answered, and the door is leaned against the frame (but it's still "locked" so I can't close it. I could close the window, but I think I don't think I'm brave enough to actually walk into the room. Ah, I'm such an admirable adult.) So, I guess I really am alone and should just relax. But yeah, it's kind of weird. What if it rains? (I'm in the UK, it rains every day. In fact, it did rain a couple of minutes ago.) But I guess that means that they're preparing to clean the flat (which would be intolerable if all the rooms reeked of paint) and that this whole thing will be over then. So, everything's fine.

Thanks, nonnie. :) I guess I just really needed somebody to talk to about it.

Who Will Be The Last One ... Sitting?*

(Anonymous) 2012-08-16 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, everyone. I remember hearing the CW was developing a game show based on Musical Chairs, but somehow I never thought it could actually make it to air. Well, it is airing on my television RIGHT NOW, and it is bad. It is so bad. It is legendarily bad. It's the Bulwer-Lytton Contest of game shows. The hosts' patter is nearly Mockumentary-esque, but without actual humor.

"Tonight, twelve weekend warriors, who are in-shape and out of their minds will put their asses to the test."

"For weeks, they've thought about nothing but chairs."

"Yes. Twelve people, one goal: Sitting."

I AM DYING, YOU GUYS.

*No, seriously, that's the tagline.

But. WHY.

Re: Who Will Be The Last One ... Sitting?*

(Anonymous) 2012-08-16 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Crack?

Instead of using the contestants names, they've given them all ~penetrating~ nicknames that make it sound like the hosts are narrating a horse race (only horses are named better). "Freeloader pushes past Babysitter and Cross-Dresser" (Yes, those are three of the contestants.) And before each round, they introduce each contestants over again, like we actually care which one is Mr. Marine and which one is Insomniac and need to see them individually wave at the camera AGAIN.

Plus, there are obstacles and bridges to the chairs (which are surrounded by a moat of water), and the obstacles and bridges have stupid nicknames too. These obstacles and bridges are called things like Fish-tail and Back-cracker, so when the "race" is being narrated, who the heck can even tell if Ranch Hand and Hammer-head are obstacles, bridges or contestants?

Oh god, if there was a big enough fandom, the fic for this show would be GLORIOUS.

Fusion! Take characters from the fandom of your choice and make them contestants. Like "Changing Channels" without any channel changing.

NA - this sounds AMAZING. How long will it stay on the air? I feel like I need to see it at least once before it dies :D

It reminds me a little of this weird French game show which used to air years ago on late-night tv. I couldn't quite figure out what it was, because my French is crap, but it seemed to be different villages competing for some kind of price, and people would have to do ridiculous obstacle courses and fire canons at brightly-coloured model towns and so forth. The highlight was when they put a bunch of villagers in brightly-coloured foam jack-in-the-box costumes and let an actual bull into the ring, and they all had to try to hop to safety while the bull kept knocking them down. I wish I knew what that show was called, it was insane.

It's in Arrow's time slot, currently leading in to the SPN reruns, so I assume (unless it gets canceled early) it will air until Arrow premieres.

Teen Wolf questions

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, I just got caught up & watched the S2 finale. I HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS.

- Was it just me, or did Grampa Tigh's plan not make make a lot of sense? Like, if he just wanted a werewolf bite to cure his plot-cancer, surely there were easier ways to do it. And why did he kidnap Stiles and then just let him go? None of it made sense!

- Why is Derek/Stiles such an enormous juggernaut ship when the two characters barely interacted this season, other than that one time Stiles got paralyzed on to of Derek? ...I guess some questions answer themselves, really.

- Did the Lydia/Jackson TRUE LOVE 4-EVA thing come more or less out of nowhere? I mean, I thought they had something, and were each kind of using each other, and Jackson treated Lydia like crap all season, but clearly regretted it a little. But the whole "she's the only one who can save him!" seemed a bit sudden.

- How is Derek SO BAD at being an Alpha?

- Erika/Boyd, yes?

- Pack of Alphas, WTF? Also, have we ever seen an Omega on this show? They talked about them, IIRC, but everyone we've seen has been Beta or an Alpha.

- How much did Alison and her dad make you want to cry at the end? ;_;

- Alison/Lydia, OTP?

(Some of these may be more rhetorical than others.)
