Does anybody know where I can get started?
Downloading it, or reading it? There actually isn't that much of the Young Avengers title itself, and their origin story starts at #1. Characters from other Marvel books appear, but you don't need to have read those books to understand what's going on.
I recommend skipping all the Civil War material, but that's because Civil War broke my heart and poured sugar in my gas tank. I haven't read the Children's Crusade yet.
I do most of my comic book downloading via DC++, I think on the server Comicopolis.

Dowloading it. Though if I can read it online that would be awesome too!
And are those issues? TBH, I'm a comic-book virgin. Half of this year I learned via Wiki last month. :S

Civil War was a company-wide event (sort of a plot arc that effects every comic book set in the Marvel primary universe), and Children's Crusade is a miniseries. The Young Avengers comic book itself has twelve issues, numbered #1 to #12 (sometimes comics have a #0, which may be an actual story or may just be preview marketing bullshit). Within those issues there are a few arcs, which, like arcs on a TV show, will run from, say, issue #3 to issue #7 (I just made those numbers up). People generally refer to these as e.g. "the Sidekicks arc", "the Family Matters storyline". Single issues of a comic book generally only have titles if they tell a self-contained story.
Okay, enough lecturing! I hope that was actually useful information. The next part is going to be very handholdy, maybe moreso than you need.
Here's a torrent for issues #1-12: http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/204597913/young+avengers?tab=summary (you want the link that says "Download .torrent", not any of the other misleading download links)
I have no idea if that torrent has any life in it. I download all of my comics using StrongDC++: http://strongdc.sourceforge.net/index.php?lang=eng
I point that program at Comicopolis: dchub://comicopolis.no-ip.org:313 (this server requires registration, which takes about five seconds, and which it will walk you through the first time you log in)
Then I search for e.g. "Young Avengers". I generally find it less useful to download directly out of the search results than to look for someone who appears to have a directory named (in this case) Young Avengers, right-click, and select "browse file list" -- this will usually get you someone who has most or all of the run of something, and you can get the entire thing in one shot instead of having to put it together piecemeal.
I read comic books with CDisplayEx: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdisplayex/
This program reads .cbr, .cbz, .rar and .zip files, which are the formats you'll generally find comic books in. I recommend double page view (right-click on the viewing area, Options, Double Page; alternatively, Ctrl+D).
I recommend downloading YA #1-12 (or just a few issues at the beginning) to see if you like it. If you do, I'll walk you through figuring out what books the other Young Avengers content is in so you can download them too, and I have recs for other books you'll probably like. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

na. I haven't used DC++ for ages but it used to be that to be allowed on the server, you had to have a minimum volume (idk, 1 to 5 GB) of files already downloaded and available to other people. So that might not be the best venue to get comics for a relative newbie.

Comicopolis doesn't have a minimum share, as far as I know. :D

ayrt. I stand corrected then :D It used to be that all comics servers had minimum share requirements. At least those I used regularly.
I suppose I'll have to revisit some old haunts then. I still have over 50GB of comics on my hard drive, so I have stuff to share. Do Z-Cult and Comic Crypt still exist?

I honestly haven't gotten around enough to tell you. (I was going to say you've got way more than me, but I've got about 45GB. Lord. Still, a bit more than me.) I used to use ComicShack and another server I can't remember the name of, and switched to Opolis when they instituted annoying registration schemes.

ayrt. LOL. That 55GB is actually a result of a long and very involved process of deleting stuff I never got around to reading. I still have way more comics than necessary, even after getting rid of a few dozen gigs of various DC titles I no longer read. So well done on you for keeping it relatively small :)

I just want to say thank you for the CDisplayEx link. I had the original CDisplay some years back and lost it in a computer crash so that link is a BIG help.

CDisplayEx is a lot slicker than classic CDisplay, too! Its handling of two-page spreads in double page mode isn't as good, but otherwise I love it. I use it for browsing archives of screenshots too.

I recently watched Sherlock because all of the season-end hoopla finally got me interested. I find myself wanting fic, but it seems to be tough to find what I am actually looking for...
I think Sherlock is mostly a dick and really don't care about him. I care even less about Sherlock/Watson. What I really want is Watson being BAMF fic, or Watson!abuse at the hands of a dastardly villain and it's all Sherlock's fault. I want Watson being his awesome self and Sherlock actually appreciating or worrying about him and realizing how awesome someone besides himself is for once. Because Watson deserves it, damn it.
Soooo is there like a Watson-centered fic space out there? Or at least one for gen fic? I have found nothing so far.

Re: Watson rules, Sherlock drools - where is the fic at?
(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 04:04 am (UTC)(link)I know there's a sherlock kink meme of the type that produces plotfic out there (I think?), but IDK if that's for the series, or movies, or books, or whatever the fuck.
Re: Watson rules, Sherlock drools - where is the fic at?
(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 04:05 am (UTC)(link)http://watsons-woes.livejournal.com/ may be your speed. Most of the fic on the first page appears to be PG-rated, which after this fandom I find incredibly surprising.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 10:35 am (UTC)(link)Hijacking your thread for this:
What do you guys think about Elementary, the American modern version of Sherlock Holmes, complete with Holmes living in New York (and I bet you everything that Mycroft works for the white house).

Re: Watson rules, Sherlock drools - where is the fic at?
(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 10:40 am (UTC)(link)My opinion: AUGH. The Brits are doing it way better than any other modernisation possibly could, lbh.
Re: Watson rules, Sherlock drools - where is the fic at?
(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 11:37 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, same here. I've seen people asking for a "sexier" Holmes, which pisses me off. First, our current Holmeses are RDJ and Cumberbatch, is that not sexy enough?! And second, why do all people on tv have to be super attractive?! That's the appeal of British tv for me, normal looking people (okay, of course they are attractive too, but it's not shoved in your face). Also, "the series needs fresh American faces". No. It's Sherlock Holmes. It doesn't need American faces. Of course I'm not saying that only Brits are allowed to make Sherlock Holmes movies/series, and I personally love the Russian series, for example (it is so so slashy. There a scene where Holmes and Watson cuddle in a cab (Watson was injured), and an almost-kiss scene... also, it's all in all very well done, with great actors.)
But this feels just... respectless. Gee, a modern Holmes, I wonder what gave them that idea. Many people have argued that this isn't new because House is a modern Holmes, but well, it's not actually a modern Holmes adaption. Detective Conan is a modern Holmes too, but it's not the manga adaption of Sherlock Holmes. (Also, can it FINALLLY END?! I've been reading it for 10 years now. 10 fucking years, it's a wonder I'm still a fan.)
I kind of imagine it to be a bit goofy, slashy, CSI-esque... I mean, okay, I've ranted a lot about it here, but I technically think there can't be enough Sherlock Holmes... but this is just such a blatant rip-off. It's too soon and it reeks of wanting to cash in on the Sherlock Holmes trend in general and the Sherlock trend in particular.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)Dude, Benedict Cumberbatch is hideous. He looks like some sort of revolting insect.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)Fuck you, insects are beautiful creatures!
Cumberbatch is merely another one of those hairless apes.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)I don't understand how people could write slash about him and his scary rapist face. Seriously, I wonder how many horcruxes he has stashed away in his attic.

I can understand people finding him attractive, but I do find it puzzling how many of those people think everyone should find him attractive.

I have two recs for this, both by
blind_author.
Reaction: Moriarty raped John when he kidnapped him and (from the summary) "John makes it through the whole encounter with Moriarty and Homles via his own badass soldier nerves of steel," but then the extent of John's injuries are discovered when he goes to the hospital. Not a healing!cock story, although it is John/Sherlock. This story does emphasize the non-con a lot--it's based off a kinkmeme prompt.
http://blind-author.livejournal.com/636.html?format=light
Semper Fidelis: This one's a WiP, but the current part has everyone out of danger for the moment and ends on something of a good note. Moriarty fakes evidence to fool the Holmes brothers that John and "Anthea" were spying on his behalf. The two of them have to go on the run from the police and the Holmes brothers and Moriarty (who plans to torture them to death and then reveal they weren't working with him after all to mess with Mycroft and Sherlock's heads).

I'm looking for new music, stuff that's been, or going to be, released this year. Any suggestions?
