Anyone up for a livewatch thread? Any thoughts before it begins?

I need a new series

What do you guys watch on Tuesdays @ 7pm?

I'm trying to break my Glee habit and I need something to watch.

I take it you live in Central/Mountain time.

I watch Dancing with the Stars, but Tuesday night is the results show, so it's usually got a lot of filler.

THANK YOU

Thank you everyone for the advice. The first week is over and I'm pretty settled in and it almost feels like home right now. I guess I was freaking out over nothing and thank you for making me feel so much better.

I'm bookmarking this for the advice!

I am watching it now, anon. It's actually really interesting. I love the look of the worlds in the show and the world building. I don't like the teenagers. :/

appropriation?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
My uncle brought me back some prayer flags from overseas, and I put them up because I think they're pretty. Then I read this: http://ethrosdemon.livejournal.com/622927.html#cutid1 "Why does Lafayette have Tibetan prayer flags hanging on his porch? I mean, I know a lot of ignant white western liberals do this, but where the HELL was Lafayette that he ran across these? I guess in NOLA. But...still. "

Is it bad?

Not bad per se, but you need to think carefully about why you're hanging them.

I found this:At the walk up to the Red Panda enclosure at the Highland wildlife park, they have a long line of Tibetan prayer flags. One of the things that interested me about this display is that they have sign boards explaining a lot of context about the meaning and signficance of prayer flags, including notes about things like when it's appropriate to put one up, with a specific point about how they were careful to do it on a suitable day, and their relevance in traditions of that part of the Himalayas.

To me, that's actually okay. Because there's respect, and no hint of claiming that this is somehow something that belongs to the Highlands or the Zoological Society or anyone but the people whose culture this comes from - and there's very little opportunity for people to just make assumptions about it.

from here: http://the-willow.insanejournal.com/947475.html?thread=1172243#t1172243

Short answer seems to be that they're religious and cultural artifacts, and if you're not part of that religion or that culture, you should learn at least enough not to profane them first. (Wikipedia has a couple of sentences about when they're supposed to be hung and in what order, but nothing too detailed.) Then even after doing that, you should probably have a reason for hanging them that's related to their function as prayer flags, rather than their looks.

Oh for fuck's sake. If you want to hang them up because they're pretty, hang them the fuck up. Some people will be offended by every little thing.

I'm really not excited about the teenager storyline either, but I guess they want to try to appeal to a wide audience. Maybe it will get better :\

Things to do in Chicago

I'm headed to Chicago for a long weekend, and I'm looking for things to see, do, places to eat, etc. Any suggestions?

There is tons of stuff do in Chicago.

Navy Pier is fun to visit. There is Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry and the Field Museum. They often have passes for all three at discounts and things. Also fun is the Art Institute. China town is great to go to. You should be able to get to all these places fairly easily on the el. Buy yourself the 3 day pass or whatever it is. Worth it. Walking around downtown and just seeing what's there is fun. There's tons of shopping. No worries- you'll find plenty to do. I high recommend the Field Museum. They've always had really cool exhibits when I've gone.

Here is their website: http://fieldmuseum.org/

Have a blast nonnie!

state of meme

(Anonymous) 2011-10-10 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Encouraging people to kill themselves? FFS. :( Quitting you, meme, even if I loved you and defended you in the past.

Re: state of meme

(Anonymous) 2011-10-10 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Why is this in the OT post?

2) Is there a context or are you trolling?

Re: state of meme

(Anonymous) 2011-10-10 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
1) I made a thread because I was incredibly upset about it and I don't talk about meme in my journal. Are discussion about meme on topic? I didn't want to get wanked for being off-topic. Another reason I didn't post in the main thread because of the levels of nasty wank going on there right now. And because the probability I'll see another comment like that isn't zero.
2) Yes, there is context but the comment is screened now. So I'm not going to repeat it. Your trolling accusation cemented my decision. FFS.

Really? :/ I don't do meme anymore besides the OT post. I thought I'd miss it, but I really don't. I definitely recommend taking a break for a while, if not coming by at all anymore.
