The more I think about this, the more it bugs me. I wish there had at least been some indication that they were planning to come back and/or blow the whistle. The story states outright that it is not that hard to get someone off the planet if you have a ship (since apparently no one is monitoring air traffic) and a man inside. Hyperion wouldn't be making such an effort to stay hidden (the means and mechanism of this make no sense either) if their operations were legal, so in theory they don't even have to go back, just take their story to someone who can do something about it.
