Hmmm, yeah. I'm the nonny above who said that I would have preferred a standard abuse background to the witch curse thing, but I think it could have worked the other direction, too. It was the combination that didn't come together. I would have enjoyed something that was an actual fairy tale/magical realism as much as something completely real-world. It was the six of one, half a dozen of the other that didn't work.
